Exclusive presentation of the new Syndeac publication: « Musical creation: for a public policy that meets the challenges ».
November 21, 2023, 2:45 pm – 3:30 pm

In 2022, Syndeac asked its members working for and in the musical field, whether they be specialized or multidisciplinary (creative venues, concert halls; artistic teams, ensembles, independent labels), about their positions on public policies for music. Syndeac has endeavored to go beyond the current issues of funding for the industry and the CNM: its members have examined in depth what should be a genuine public service policy for musical creation and distribution. Artistic risk-taking, the diversity of aesthetics and business models, the balance between creation and repertoire, the role of institutions and decentralized structures: these are just some of the subjects that have been at the heart of Syndeac’s reflections, and which today culminate in the publication of the booklet « Création musicale: pour une politique publique à la hauteur des enjeux », unveiled exclusively for New Deal!

Introducing the #Ellesdirigent initiative
November 21, 2023, 3:30 pm – 4:15 pm

#EllesDirigent is a network of female project leaders designed to promote and nurture female leadership in the heritage and creative music sector. Such a project responds both to the urgent need for action in favor of gender equality within the so-called « Classical » sector, and to the absence to date of such a platform bringing together promotion/visibility, transmission and content production. #EllesDirigent aims to be an incubator of sisterhood, a creator of lasting, cross-generational links, and a central operator in the transition of our professional sector towards genuine, lasting gender equality.

Great debate : Reductions in artistic availability: what impact on musical ambitions?
November 21, 2023, 6:00 pm

For independent musical ensembles, the economics of production and distribution have changed dramatically over the last decade. In particular, the traditional balance between public subsidies, which were mainly directed towards operating expenses, and show sales, which covered the bulk of artistic costs, has been squeezed by the erosion of these two traditional sources of revenue. How can new artistic levers be developed, what mechanisms are currently mobilizing ensembles, presenters and their partners, and what new avenues should they explore with them?

with :
  • Margaux Blanchard, artistic director of Les Ombres ensemble
  • Dominique Muller, DGCA Music Delegate
  • Jean-Philippe Thiellay, President of the CNM
Moderator : Vincent Agrech, journalist (Diapason, Notations) and cultural engineering consultant (CrossMedia Culture)

Is heritage and creative music a matter for specialists?
November 22, 2023, 2:30 pm – 3:45 pm

At a time when programmers of multi-disciplinary stages are increasingly taking an interest in musical creation of all repertoires, and conversely, when musical ensembles are showing a growing interest in these stages, programming is taking a long time to change. Is music by nature the main and irremediable cause of this difficulty in being programmed?

with :
  • Anaïs Arnaud, ONJ administrator, member of the Syndeac music group
  • Laurent Dreano, Director of the Maison de la Culture d’Amiens, member of the Syndeac music group, President of the Association des Scènes nationales
  • Alexandra Hernandez, director of the Transboréales festival
  • Yannick Lemaire, artistic director of the Harmonia Sacra ensemble
  • Gwen Rouger, pianist and performer
Moderator : Sandrine Piq, ONDA music consultant

Towards more responsible distribution of music and performing arts
November 22, 2023, 4:00 pm – 05:30 pm

The short lifespan of certain artistic productions, and the social and environmental impact of their short distribution runs, mean that the sector is forced to consider their sustainability, as well as the implementation of virtuous, shared distribution methods.

For many years, distribution structures, festivals, venues, etc. have been working to distribute shows in a way that respects today’s issues. These initiatives, often individual, have made it possible to experiment with good practices and inspire others: but they are no longer sufficient, and national and political recognition of these issues is necessary and is being built today.

What kind of partnerships can we imagine for a more responsible distribution of shows, and what tools can we already use to improve distribution? What needs do players in the performing arts community identify today to improve cooperation and reduce, together, the environmental impact of music and performing arts distribution today? What is the desirable future?

with :
  • Marine Berthet, administrator of the Festival Cordes en ballade and managing director of the Quatuor Debussy
  • Céline Portes co-founder of Arviva, general delegate of the Correspondances ensemble
  • Mathilde SallezEuropean project coordinator for Le Périscope, coordinator of the Footprints, Better Live and Landscape projects
  • Anne-Cécile Sibué, General Secretary, Office National de Diffusion Artistique
  • Sophie ZellerHead of the Performing Arts Department, Deputy Director General for Artistic Creation, French Ministry of Culture

Great debate: The art of programming: a conditioned freedom?
November 22, 2023, 5:45 pm – 07:15 pm

In 2016, the LCAP law safeguarded or reinforced the facets of a fundamental triptych: freedom of creation, programming and distribution. This legislative safeguard is supposed to restrict the goodwill of local elected officials and pressure groups, and encourage artistic risk-taking. And yet, this arsenal did not prevent the Théâtre Nouvelle Génération’s recent affair with Laurent Wauquiez: we discuss this with Joris Mathieu, its director, lawyer Agnès Tricolore, delegate of the Observatoire de la liberté de création, and academic François Ribac.

with :
  • Joris Mathieu, author, stage director and director of Théâtre Nouvelle Génération – CDN de Lyon
  • François Ribac Composer of musical theater, Senior Lecturer (HDR) at the University of Dijon, Associate Researcher at Ladyss
  • Agnès Tricoire, Delegate of the Observatoire de la liberté de création (French Observatory on Creative Freedom)

Moderator: Marie Hédin-Christophe, Managing Director of La Lettre du Musicien
